Victoria Walks offers support, tips and ideas to get more people walking.  Victoria Walks is leading the move to create walkable neighbourhoods by working with communities, government, councils and local organisations to encourage walking for leisure, fitness and/or everyday purposes (to work, shops, school and around the neighbourhood etc).

Just Start Walking Australia

Just Start Walking Australia is an initiative from the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA), based on a global initiative from the World Federation of Chiropractic.

The Just Start Walking initiative was developed to raise awareness about the importance of keeping active, the benefits this can offer to your overall well-being and spinal health, as well as providing an easy-to-use program to help encourage regular physical activity.

To help motivate you to incorporate regular walking into your lifestyle, download the free Just Start Walking mobile app, which can keep track of all your walks, set walking reminders and even let you share your progress with friends.

The CAA is encouraging Australians to celebrate World Spine Day on October 16 by scheduling some time to Just Start Walking. For further information, visit www.juststartwalking.com.au

CANCER COUNCIL WALK TO WORK DAY

FRIDAY 16 SEPTEMBER, 2011

The 13th annual Cancer Council Walk to Work Day is taking place on Friday 16 September, 2011.

And for the first time, participants can raise funds for cancer research, support and services.

Organisations are encouraged to support their employees to build regular walking into their daily routines by becoming Walking Workplaces, while individuals are encouraged to put their feet first and register to participate and raise much-needed funds for Cancer Council Australia.

Sadly, cancer remains one of Australia’s biggest health problems and is expected to claim over 40,000 Australians in 2011. An estimated 114,000 cases of cancer were diagnosed in Australia last year. And one in every two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.

About 30% of cancers can be prevented through living a healthy lifestyle, which includes good nutrition and regular exercise. And for most Australians, walking regularly is the best exercise, especially as it can be built into our daily routines.
So please, put Cancer Council Walk to Work Day in your diary for Friday 16 September, 2011.
WHAT: Cancer Council Walk to Work Day 2011
WHEN: Friday 16 September
WHERE: All workplaces around Australia
WHY: To encourage employers and employees to build regular walking into their daily routines to improve productivity and long-term health. This year, participants are also fundraising for Cancer Council.
