There are so many good reasons to walk:

  • It’s a safe way to a healthier life.
  • It’s free.
  • It's a far more sociable way of travelling.
  • You can do it anywhere and at any time.
  • You don’t need any special equipment – just a pair of shoes.

We want to encourage more people to walk—of all ages, be it fast or slow, on your own or with a group, for travel, for exercise, leisure or for pleasure.

So we’ve renamed October—Walktober! And for the whole month, Walktober is supporting local government, community groups and organisations to organise a range of walking activities for their community. Last year over 500 events and 90,000 people participated in Walktober around the state. This year marks Walktober's fourth year and we are hoping even more people will get involved!

YOU can be part of Walktober.

  • If you are organising a walk during October link it with Walktober. Tag your event with the Walktober logo and Register your event.
  • Workplaces—your challenge is to swap your car for your feet during the last week of October. The Walktober Workplace Challenge is a fun competition between workplaces, to see how many walking trips employees can make to save car journeys.

  • Or simply join one of the many Walktober events!  Visit Walktober Community Events to see what's happening in your neighbourhood.

Walktober exists to motivate and support people to safely walk for fun, health, transport, the environment and to build sustainable and connected communities. Walktober has been developed by Kinect Australia (incorporating VICFIT) in collaboration with VicHealth and this year is also funded by the Department of Transport and the Victorian Seniors Festival.

take steps for diabetes

Diabetes Australia – Vic is the proud charity partner of Walktober again this year.

Diabetes is the fasting growing chronic disease in Australia. Currently diabetes affects 210,000 Victorians, with 450 new cases diagnosed every week.

Since 1953 Diabetes Australia – Vic (DA–Vic) has been the peak consumer body and leading charity representing all people affected by diabetes and those at risk. Our purpose is to minimise the impact of diabetes in the community, to help all people affected by diabetes and those at risk, and contribute to the search for a cure.

For information on diabetes or to support DA–Vic, please contact us on www.diabetesvic.org.au, email: mail@diabetesvic.org.au
